A Look Ahead During the Bye Week

Towson's football team was off this week, so let's follow the rest of the action in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), along with upcoming Tiger opponents like  St. Francis (Pa.) and LSU.

The Tigers' next foe will be William & Mary, who is now 0-2 after two heartbreaking losses.  Two weeks ago, they fell to Maryland at College Park, 7-6. On Saturday, after playing two quarterbacks against the Terrapins, the Tribe went with Michael Graham against Lafayette in their home opener. Graham struggled, completing seven-of-19 for just 54 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Raphael Ortiz came in late in the fourth quarter, and on his second drive with the Tribe down 16-7, he drove the team down the field in 80 yards to cut the deficit to 16-14. William & Mary had to attempt an onside kick with less than two minutes left, but Lafayette recovered the ball and ran the clock out.

Now, the question is whether William & Mary head coach Jimmye Laycock will start his third quarterback in three weeks when the meet the Tigers at Unitas Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 12 pm. Considering Ortiz has come into the game in relief the last two weeks and found some success, he seems the most likely choice to start against Towson.

William & Mary's defense has been very impressive in the first two games. Against Lafayette, it allowed 112 yards rushing on 44 carries, allowing just 2.5 yards per attempt. Against Maryland, the Tribe's defense allowed just 91 yards on 33 carries (2.8 ypc). That's the same Terrapin team that put up 36 points on the road against Temple, who also rushed for 144 yards on 48 carries.

Let's move to the rest of the CAA. The league hasn't fared too well thus far against FBS teams. On Saturday, New Hampshire fell at Minnesota, 44-7, Maine dropped one at Boston College, 34-3, and Georgia State lost at Tennessee, 51-13.

Rhode Island couldn't overcome three turnovers and lost to Monmouth, 41-6. The Hawks put up an impressive 539 yards against the Rams' defense.

However, there were also five very impressive CAA wins against FCS competition. Delaware had to fight the weather, but came out on top against Delaware State, 38-14. The Blue Hens are now 2-0, and while they amassed just 282 total yards of offense, they didn't need a whole lot of production. Their first score came on a 91-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ricky Tunstall. Jerel Harrison also caught two touchdown passes from Trent Hurley.

After losing to Virginia in its opener, Richmond came back in style, routing Gardner-Webb, 41-8. Old Dominion also moved to 2-0 with a dominating performance over Hampton, 45-7. James Madison moved to 2-0 with another easy win, crushing Alcorn State, 42-3.

Finally, Villanova bounced back from an opening loss to Temple to defeat Fordham at home, 28-13. The Wildcats came back from a 13-7 first half deficit to outscore the Rams, 21-0 in the second half. Sophomore Austin Medley led Villanova with 125 yards on 16 carries.

As for the next two Towson opponents following William & Mary, LSU was victorious over Washington at home, 41-3. The No. 3 Tigers put up 437 total yards of offense, including 195 passing yards from junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger. Towson's Homecoming opponent in two weeks will be St. Francis (Pa.). The Red Flash produced 475 yards of total offense in defeating Bryant, 39-28 at home yesterday. St. Francis' Khairi Dickson (148) and senior quarterback John Kelly (138) combined for 286 rushing yards.
