Annapolis, Md. - Navy (7-1-0) defeated Towson University women's
soccer (0-6-1) 2-1 this afternoon at the Glen Warner Soccer Complex on the Navy
Yard in the final game of the 2012 Navy Invitational.
Senior Cheyenne Skidmore and sophomore Katie Ponce were named to the All-Tournament
Team.
The Mids drew first blood as Fallon Puppolo scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 15th
minute. But the Tigers continued to press offensively, outscoring the Mids 8-5
in the first half and holding a 3-1 edge in corners.
"We weren't getting our shots on
frame in first half," said head coach Greg Paynter. "But in the second half we were really focused, came out and did a
good job. The first 20 minutes we really controlled the second half. We got
tremendous central midfield play and the forwards are really gelling. We fought hard today."
Caprice Kelty scored
at 73:59 off a pass from Brittany Fruin
to put the Mids up 2-0 in the second. But the Tigers weren't through.
Dispossessing Navy of the ball, sophomore Katlyn Axenfeld put Towson on the board in the 89th minute after her
long shot beat the Mids' keeper Elizabeth
Hoerner.
"We were scrambling in the midfield, Katlyn got a good ball, created space for herself and scored from about 25 yards,"
said Paynter.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Quinn made six saves in net for
Towson, as the Tigers outshot the Mids 22-13 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
Towson has the week off before traveling to Morgantown, W.
Va. to face the Mountaineers on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
