Morgantown, W.Va. - The Towson University women's soccer team (0-7-1)
was upended by West Virginia University (3-3-3), 5-0, this evening at Dick Dlesk
Stadium.
"We played a really good first
half," said head coach Greg Paynter.
"We were able to execute a game plan of possessing the ball. We had legitimate
scoring chances and made it hard for them."
West Virginia scored first when Kate Schwindel received a pass from Bry McCarthy and Frances Silva in the ninth minute. The Mountaineers remained one
goal ahead through to the halftime break despite the Tigers' offensive pressure.
The Mountaineers' McCarthy scored eight
minutes into the second half, sending a rebound back into the right side of the
net from 10 yards out to go up 2-0. Silva scored two goals of her own to put
the Mountaineers ahead 4-0 by the 66th minute. Annalika Steyn's one-timer at 72:43 gave WVU its final margin.
"They scored a couple of quick
goals in the second half," continued Paynter. "But overall, I'm actually pretty
pleased. It was a pretty good atmosphere, something like 1000 fans in the rain.
It was a good challenge, and I feel good about where we are as a team right now."
Sophomore goalies Erin Quinn and Jessica Evanick split time in goal for the Tigers. Quinn made three
saves and Evanick faced one shot. Sarah
Keane worked in net for the Mountaineers, making one save.
Next weekend, Towson plays at Delaware on Friday, Sept. 21
at 7 p.m.
