The Towson University Tigers were victorious once again on Homecoming Saturday as they defeated St Francis (Pa.), 46-17. The Tigers fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter, but from there on out it was all Towson. The Tigers scored through the air, on the ground, and with special teams.
It was a record setting day for the Tigers. Sophomore running back Terrance West, playing in just his 14th game, scored three rushing touchdowns. His 34 career rushing touchdowns pass Jason Corle's 33 to move West into the top career leader in that category. Think about that. West is averaging almost two and a half rushing touchdowns per game for his career. Against the Red Flash on Saturday, he did not play for most of the game. West got hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after his second score, and that did not sit well with head coach Rob Ambrose. Later in the game, center Doug Shaw also was penalized for the same thing. Shaw's night also came to an early end.
Derrick Joseph returned a kickoff 99 yards on Saturday to tie a Towson record. It was his second 99-yard return; he had one last year against New Hampshire. Joseph's return in 2011 was the first kickoff return for a TD that the Tigers had had since Maurice Sydnor had one against Butler in 1995. I had driven my color commentators crazy for about 10 years by mentioning how long it had been since the Tigers had scored a touchdown on a kickoff return. I also drove Gordy Combs crazy about it.
When Coach Ambrose took over four years ago, I started driving him nuts with the lack of kickoff returns for TDs. Ambrose guaranteed me last year we would get one. As mentioned, Joseph did it last year against New Hampshire. After that game, Ambrose guaranteed me we would get another one very soon. He was right.
So Joseph finds himself tied with David Meggett and Sydnor for the all-time school record with two. Now I'll make a guarantee - the sophomore from Waldorf, Md. will break that three-way tie.
That brings us to this week's game. The Towson Tigers will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take on the Tigers of LSU. Our Tigers will be in the top 15 in the FCS rankings, the LSU Tigers are number three in the FBS polls. There is absolutely no question this is the best football Towson has ever played. It's not even close. Think about it, this the first time the Tigers will play a ranked FBS school, and they are number three. LSU lost the national championship to Alabama last year and are the last team to beat the Crimson Tide (in the 2011 regular season).
I know that Coach Ambrose has been asked about this game since the Towson announced this game last year. I also know that Coach Ambrose had no desire to talk about this game. When you have been around coaches for a while, you find that they don't want to talk about anybody but their next opponent.
After the Tigers' win this past Saturday, Ambrose talked about LSU for the first time. He told Ron Meehan and myself on the Towson Sports Network broadcast of the homecoming game, "Hey, they will put 11 on the field, we will put 11 on the field. If you don't think you are going to win, why bother playing?"
Let's face it, you never know what's going to happen when the opening whistle blows. Who thought the Orioles would make the playoffs this year? Who thought the 2011 Towson football team would make it to the playoffs? So lets just strap'em up and see what happens.
Our next addition of Tiger Talk will be this Thursday night at Bill Bateman's Bistro on campus from 6-7 p.m. Rob Ambrose will join us to talk about this week's LSU game and last week's St. Francis game. We will also be joined by other members of the Towson coaching staff.
If you can't make it to Bateman's, you can hear it right here on TowsonTigers.com. And don't forget to tune in at 6 p.m. Saturday night for the Towson-LSU football game again right here on TowsonTigers.com. You can also access all the Towson Sports Network broadcasts on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device on the Towson Tigers app.
