TOWSON, Md. –
After posting a seasonal high 193.000 team score in last Saturday's home meet,
Coach Vicki Chliszczyk and the
Towson University gymnastics team will travel to Cornell University for a dual
meet on Saturday, February 2 at 12 noon at Teagle Gymnasium.
The
Tigers are averaging 192.400 through their first three meets while Cornell has
a 190.258 average. This will be the tenth time that Towson and Cornell have met
in a dual meet. Towson has won all nine previous meetings.
“We
are getting better gradually,” says Coach Chliszczyk, in her third season as the
Tigers' coach. “However, we need a lot more consistency. We have been vaulting
well and we have also done a good job on floor. But, we need better results on
bars and beam.”
With
seven newcomers on the roster, the Tiger coach has been pleased with their progress.
Freshman
Abby Griswold competed as an all-around for the first time in last week's meet. She
finished second with a 38.70 score. Griswold has been one of the Tigers' most
consistent gymnasts on bars, averaging 9.69. She has also done well on beam
with a 9.742 average.
Freshmen
Katie Sassa and Lydia Thompson have also excelled in the early
season. Sassa, who had a career high 9.85 vault score last week, is averaging
9.783 on vault, 9.51 on beam and 9.72 on floor exercise. Thompson is averaging
9.70 on vault and 9.66 on bars.
The
Tigers have also received a lift from junior Alexa Davis. Recovering from an elbow
injury, the 2011 ECAC Rookie of the Year has competed on beam and floor so far
this season. She had a career high 9.85 score on beam at Penn State two weeks
ago and has a 9.76 beam average. On floor, she is averaging 9.67 after earning
a seasonal high 9.80 score last week.
“This
is an important meet for us,” says Chliszczyk. “We need to put 24 good routines
together and go from there.”
After
their trip to Cornell, the Tigers will visit the University of Maryland on
Friday, February 8 for a 7:00 quad meet in the Comcast Center. The meet will
feature four teams from the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). New
Hampshire and North Carolina State will join Towson and Maryland in the meet.
