RICHMOND, Va. – Senior first
baseman Bina Abbott
of the Towson University softball team was named the Colonial Athletic
Association Softball Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. She shares the award with Delaware's Lara Andrews. The
award follows the Tigers' excellent performance at the East Carolina Pirate
Classic last week.
Abbott began the season on a
torrid pace at the plate hitting .429 with seven RBI's in the first five games
of the season. One of Abbott's big hits included a bases-loaded double that
scored three runs in Towson's 7-2 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday.
Abbott also hit her first home run of the season against the Vikings in the
tournament's first game Friday morning.
For
the week, the Abbott went 6-for-14 at the plate while posting an impressive
.857 slugging percentage. Her seven
RBI's led the team.
The Tigers won four of their
first five games of the season at the tournament and finished with the best
record among all competing teams at 4-1. The Tigers' win on Friday over the
Ohio Bobcats was a historic moment for Tiger head coach Lisa Costello,
who earned her 500th career win.
Towson continues the regular
season at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic beginning on Friday.
