Greatest Moments in Towson Golf History: #5

Moment No. 5: Jeff Castle shoots a school-record 63 (-8) at the James Madison Invitational

The Towson men's golf team found itself trailing Rutgers by seven strokes entering the final day of the 2004 James Madison Invitational. Tiger head coach Brian Yaniger told his team that each player needed to shoot two strokes better than yesterday and the team would come back and win the tournament. Then-sophomore Jeff Castle jokingly said he could make up those strokes by himself. Little did anyone know that just a few hours later, Castle would look like a psychic as he shot the round of his life.

Castle's final round 63 not only set a school-record but it also guided the Tigers past the Scarlet Knights. Towson made up seven strokes and Castle's birdie on the 18th clinched the win and a round of 63. The tournament win also gave the Tigers the No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic region.

John Duthie later tied Castle's school-record low round by shooting an 8-under 63 at the 2010 Navy Fall Classic. It was the first tournament of the season, which Duthie won, and as a result was ranked as the No. 1 player in the country.
