Kurt Wertz Named As CAA Co-Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior designated hitter Kurt Wertz of Towson University has been named as the co-winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award for the week ending May 18, it has been announced by CAA officials.

He shares the award with senior outfielder Nick Ferdinand of the University of Delaware.

In a three-game series against Northeastern last weekend, Wertz batted .333 with four hits in 12 at bats. He led the Tigers to a series win over the Huskies with eight runs batted in.

In the series opener, he helped the Tigers to a 14-1 victory with three hits, three runs scored and five runs batted in. He had his second two-homer game of the season. In the second inning, he hit a solo home run to give Towson a 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, he belted a grand slam homer to put Towson ahead, 12-1.

In the second game of the series, he blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning, putting the Tigers ahead, 5-4. After the Huskies tied the score, Wertz drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored the game-winning run in a 7-6 victory.

Wertz, who was also named as the CAA Co-Player of the Week in April, is batting .335, second on the team. He has 37 runs with 12 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs and 57 runs batted in. While leading the Tigers in home runs, he is tied for third in the CAA in round-trippers. He also ranks third in the CAA in RBI's and his .634 slugging percentage is ranked sixth.

Wertz has helped the Tigers earn the number four seed at the CAA Tournament this week at Veterans Park in Harrisonburg, Va. The Tigers, who are 25-28 overall, face fifth-seeded Northeastern on Wednesday afternoon, May 22 in the tournament opener at 12 noon.

The double elimination tournament continues over the next four days with the CAA championship game set for Saturday, May 25.
