Parker Named As CAA Defensive Player of Year

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior catcher Andrew Parker of Towson University was named as the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year while six Tigers were named to the All-CAA teams, it was announced by CAA officials.

Junior designated hitter Kurt Wertz was named as a first team All-CAA selection while sophomore outfielder Peter Bowles, third baseman Zach Fisher, junior centerfielder/pitcher Brandon Gonnella and Parker were named second team All-CAA. Junior outfielder Dominic Fratantuono earned a spot on the All-CAA third team.

Parker is the second Tiger baseball player to be named as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Shortstop Nick Natoli, '11 was honored with the award in 2008 and 2009.

Widely considered the best defensive catcher in the CAA, Parker retired 23 of 48 base runners trying to steal. He had a .994 fielding percentage with only two errors in 309 fielding chances and he was part of seven double plays. He had only three passed balls all season.

A three-year starter at catcher for the Tigers, he was named second team All-CAA for the second time in his career. He batted .261 with an impressive .438 on-base percentage. Parker drew 35 walks and was hit by a pitch 16 times. He also ranked among the team leaders with 14 doubles and was second on the team with eight home runs. Parker tied for fourth on the team with 30 runs batted in. He enters the CAA Tournament with 46 career doubles, along with 20 home runs and 109 RBI's.

A two-time selection as CAA Player of the Week in 2013, Wertz (below) is the first Tiger baseball player to be named first team All-CAA since shortstop Gary Helmick, '09 was honored in 2009. The Tigers' second-leading hitter with a .335 batting average, Wertz leads the Tigers with 57 runs batted in. He has 12 doubles, six triples and a team-leading 11 home runs. Wertz ranks sixth in the CAA with a .634 slugging percentage and he is also third in the CAA in RBI's.

Bowles is the Tigers' leading hitter with a .352 batting average. In 44 games, he has scored 30 runs with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 45 RBI's. He is second on the team with 45 RBI's. Bowles has a .582 slugging percentage and a .409 on-base percentage.

A second-year starter at third base, Fisher did a terrific job as the Tigers' leadoff hitter. The Tigers' fourth-leading hitter with a .306 batting average, he is second on the team with 41 runs scored. Fisher has 10 doubles, a triple and 30 RBI's. He is also second on the team with 14 stolen bases and has a .401 on base percentage. A third team Capital One Academic All-America® selection last season, Fisher batted .340 in CAA games and had 18 RBI's.

Gonnella earned a spot on the All-CAA second team as a utility player. A pitcher and centerfielder for the Tigers, he compiled a 4-3 pitching record with a 4.98 E.R.A. He made 16 appearances and had two saves. In 65 innings of work, he issued only 20 walks. As the Tigers' centerfielder, Gonnella batted .268 with 24 runs scored. He had seven doubles, a triple and 20 runs batted in. In addition to stealing 10 bases, Gonnella had eight sacrifice bunts, third on the team.

Fratantuono was the Tigers' third-leading hitter with a .327 batting average, is second on the team with 41 runs scored. The only player to appear in all 53 games, he has 15 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 44 RBI's. He is second on the team with 32 walks and has a .431 on-base percentage.

Making their second consecutive appearance in the CAA Tournament, the fourth-seeded Tigers will compete for the CAA championship Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va. The Tigers, who are 25-28 overall, face fifth-seeded Northeastern on Wednesday afternoon, May 22 in the tournament opener at 12 noon.

The double elimination tournament continues over the next four days with the CAA championship game set for Saturday, May 25.
