MORNING ROAR: Thursday, May 23, 2013

Good morning Tiger Nation and welcome to the Morning Roar.

Let's Unleash the Roar

@Towson_BASE opened up the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament yesterday with a 9-8 victory over Northeastern. It was the third time in four games that the Tigers defeated the Huskies, but it wasn't easy. The Tigers had a 9-6 lead heading into the top of ninth but then gave up two runs and the tying run was on third. However junior lefthander Kyle Paul got freshman second baseman Michael Foster to fly out to left to end the game and give Towson the victory. Junior Dominic Fratantuono led the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 and driving in three runs including his seventh home run of the year. The Tigers favored the long ball in the game as Zach Fisher, Kurt Wertz, Fratantuono and Andrew Parker all went deep in the win. The win was the first time since joining the CAA that Towson has won their tournament opener. The Tigers advance to the second round where they will play top-seeded UNC Wilmington today at 2:30 p.m.

Staying with Zach Fisher, it is hard to believe that someone can balance being a Division I athlete and a graduate student at the same time, but Fisher makes it look easy. He is an economics major with a perfect 4.0 GPA while batting an impressive .307 this season with 14 stolen bases. As I mentioned before Fisher hit a home run in the Tigers' CAA tournament opener which was his first since the 2012 CAA Tournament. Milton Kent had a chance to catch up with the Tigers' third baseman and see how he is able to balance school and athletics so well in the latest edition of A View From Kent Road.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Eric Hammond has joined the @Towson_VB coaching staff and yesterday it was announced that another new face will help try to guide the Tigers to their second straight CAA regular season title. Head coach Don Metil announced that Melissa Stansbury joined his staff as an assistant coach. Stansbury comes to Towson from Salisbury where she was named the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Assistant Coach of the Year. Stansbury is a 2010 graduate from Salisbury where she played volleyball as well as track where she threw shot put and discus.

Yesterday, I told you that @Towson_WLAX's Alexa Demski will be playing in a senior all-star game this weekend. Now it was announced that she is not the only Tiger taking part in post season all-star festivities. @Towson_MLAX's Andrew Wascavage will represent Towson at the 2013 USILA/LaxWorld North/South All-Star Division I game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa. Wascavage turned in one of the best performances by a goalie in the history of the program in 2013. His .570 career save percentage is the best in Towson history and his 9.55 career GAA stands him fifth all-time at Towson. Wascavage will play on the North team in the game.

Even though the lacrosse season just ended for the Tigers a few weeks ago, it is not too soon to think about purchasing your tickets for the 2014 NCAA Tournament which will be hosted in Baltimore. The men's tournament will be played at M&T Bank Stadium and be co-hosted by Towson, Johns Hopkins, Loyola and Maryland. For more information on how to purchase your tickets click here.
