Checking in With Sofia Read

TOWSON, Md. - Recently TowsonTigers.com sat down with Sofia Read for a brief, getting-to-know-you chat. Read is a Maryland native and sports management major who has appeared in 37 games on defense in two years with the Tigers, scoring five goals and posting five assists. She earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie honors in 2011.

1. What were some things you found easier (or harder) as a sophomore after getting used to the college game last season?
SR: Year 2 of being a Towson Tiger was definitely a mix of very different emotions and experiences. Sophomore year was easier in a sense that I was already adjusted to the Division I college athlete lifestyle and cycle of eat, sleep, study, practice. After freshman year, everyone has expectations to live up to and improvements to make which causes sophomore year to also be a highly competitive period that sometimes includes moments of frustration, development, and also excitement. Overall, I'd say it was still a very fun year!

2. You helped plan the end-of-year student-athlete banquet Golden Paws. How was that experience? How do you think the event turned out?
SR: It was definitely a major learning experience! I collaborated with my fellow teammate Keggen Griffith to design the invitations and programs (major props to Keggen... she did most of the designing!). I think the event went very well for being the first banquet that was run entirely by the student-athletes. We all proved that we have the brains and brawn :)

3. How did you feel the spring season went? What improvements did you see in team dynamics and in your own game?
SR: The spring season was very encouraging. We developed a greater sense of team unity and confidence, which helped us on and off the field. Our winning record in the spring will hopefully motivate people through the summer and carry over into a successful fall season!

4. How do you see yourself building on your spring success when you return to campus in the fall?
SR: The key is to use the momentum from the spring to continue to work hard and train ...You've got to keep your eye on the prize. As a team, we continued to improve throughout the final weeks, and I am sure everyone is excited to make this fall more successful than the last.

5. What's your favorite thing to do in the summer? Who do you like to hang out with most?
SR: I just love to be outside! Living close to Washington, D.C. is really fun in the summer because there are always carnivals, fairs, and other cultural outdoor activities going on. My friends and I make it a priority to venture into D.C. because there's usually amazing food and fun crafts!
