TOWSON, Md. - The Tigers will be looking to extend a six-game home winning streak this Saturday when they begin play in the Colonial Athletic Association against visiting Hofstra. Tip off is 7:00 P.M. The game will be carried live on WTMD (89.7 FM) Radio.
Towson and Hofstra are meeting for the 49th time with the Pride ahead in the series, 29-19. The Pride have won 9 of the last 12 but the Tigers have taken two of the last three. Sixteen of the games in the series have been decided by five points or less. Since 1996 when Towson and Hofstra were both members of the America East Conference, the Pride is 22-6 against the Tigers. After the Tigers beat the Pride 74-56 in Hempstead in 1996, Hofstra rattled off 11 straight wins in the series until Towson put a halt to the streak with a 61-60 win in Hempstead that ended the 2001-02 regular season.
The game will be the first on the CAA slate for both teams. The Tigers were picked to finish 10th in the league's 2008-09 pre-season poll. Hofstra has been forecasted to finish 7th.
The Tigers are putting up their 6-game winning streak in the Towson Center against Hofstra's 5-game victory streak. This is Towson's longest victory streak at home since 2001-02 when they captured their first seven home games before Delaware ruined it with 67-64 win.
The Tigers shot a school record 14 three-pointers in an 82-65 victory at UMBC on Wednesday night that ended a 14-game road losing streak dating back to November, 2007. Josh Thornton (5-10), Troy Franklin (4-6) and Junior Hairston (3-4) combined to go 12 of 20 from beyond the arc as the Tigers ended the Retrievers' nine-game home winning streak. Thornton came off the bench to register a game high 21 points. Hairston tallied a season high 19 points. Franklin added handsomely to the box score with 15 points, a career high 9 assists and 3 steals. Guard Brian Morris, who plays the baseline runner on Towson's 1-3-1 zone, chipped in a team high 7 rebounds. For the game the Tigers shot .563 from the floor, their best field goal percentage since posting a .589 against Georgia State two years ago.
The Tigers' 14 three pointers snapped the old mark of 13 set back in 1997 against Michigan and tied in 2007 against Delaware. The 82 points were the most scored in a road win since the Tigers' 96-92 victory at Delaware in 2006.
