BASEBALL: Shane Justis Selected To Play In Southern League All-Star Game

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ? Former Tiger infielder Shane Justis, ?06 of the Huntsville Stars has been selected to play in the 2009 Southern League All-Star Game set for Monday, July 13 at Regions Park in Birmingham, Alabama. One of seven Huntsville players chosen to play for the North Team, Justis helped Huntsville win the first half championship of the Northern Division of the Class AA Southern League.

A native of Bel Air, Md. and a product of Bel Air High School, Justis is having an excellent season as the second baseman and leadoff hitter for Huntsville, a farm team for the Milwaukee Brewers.

With a .305 batting average, he is the Stars' second-leading hitter. Justis is also second on the team with 48 runs scored. In addition, he is tied for the team lead with 16 doubles. He has also hit four home runs and has 38 runs batted in.

He will be the starting second baseman for the North All-Stars in the Southern League All-Star Game.

A three-year starter at Towson, Justis played for the Tigers from 2002 to 2005. A two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection for Coach Mike Gottlieb, he earned first team honors at shortstop in 2005. As a sophomore, he was a second team All-CAA selection at second base.

The Tigers' career leader with 69 stolen bases, he batted .312 in his college career with 35 doubles, five triples, 20 home runs and 113 RBI's. With 158 runs scored, he ranks third on Towson's all-time list. With 228 career hits, he ranks sixth.

In 2005, Justis led Towson to a 34-24 record and a second place finish at the CAA Tournament. In his senior year, he batted .343 with 17 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 33 RBI's. He also led the CAA with 29 stolen bases in 32 attempts, setting school records in each category. Justis contributed to Towson's 105 home runs as a team, a mark that led NCAA Division I.  

Drafted in the 21st round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Justis spent three-plus seasons in the Dodgers' organization. While playing for five different teams, he batted .281 as a minor leaguer in the Dodgers' farm system. Last season, he batted .266 for Jacksonville, the Dodgers' AA team. He was drafted by Milwaukee in the 2008 Rule 5 Draft.

Justis is one of six former Tigers playing professional baseball. Outfielder Casper Wells, '06, a 14th round draft pick by Detroit in 2005, is currently playing for the Erie Seawolves of the Eastern League (AA).

Former Tiger outfielder Brian Conley, '08 was drafted by Baltimore in the 2008 draft. He is currently playing for the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League (A).

Former Tiger pitcher Josh Squatrito, '09 was a 25th round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals last month. He is now pitching for Batavia of the New York-Penn League.

In addition, All-American shortstop Gary Helmick, '09  was signed to a contract by the Orioles and is playing for Bluefield of the Appalachian League. Former catcher Jason Stifler, '09 is playing for the Aberdeen Ironbirds of the New York-Penn League, another team in the Orioles' farm system.
