No. 20/21 Delaware Defeats Tigers, 74-51

NEWARK, Del. - Three players scored in double figures but it was not enough as the Tigers fell to No. 20/21 Delaware, 74-51 on Thursday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers (10-3, 1-1 CAA) got 16 points from sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller in the loss.

The two teams battled hard early in the game. Delaware (11-1, 2-0 CAA) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but the Tigers were able to tie the game at 5-5 behind a bucket from senior guard Deree Fooks. The teams traded baskets with a lay-up from sophomore forward Nyree Williams pulling the Tigers to within two at 9-7 with 14:59 to play in the half. Elena Delle Donne scored 13 of the game's next 18 points to give Delaware a 22-14 lead with 8:41 to play. The Blue Hens would extend their lead to 28-18 with two minutes to play in the half behind a bucket from Akeema Richards. The Tigers scored five of the final seven points in the half to make it a 30-23 game at the break.

Delaware shot 42.4% from the floor in the first half and held the Tigers to a 29% field goal percentage. Towson held a 23-19 lead in the rebounding battle through the first 20 minutes of play.

The Tigers scored six of the first 10 points in the second half to make it a 34-29 game with 16:23 to play. Delaware pushed its lead to 44-31 as Delle Donne converted a three-point play at 14:02. Towson scored six of the next eight points to make it a 46-37 lead with 13:01 to go in the game. The Blue Hens used a 16-4 run to take a 62-43 lead with 6:29 to play. McTiller hit a three-pointer for the Tigers at 5:33 to make it a 62-47 game. The Blue Hens closed the game on a 12-4 run to claim the 74-51 victory.

Delaware shot 62.1% from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 51.6% from the field. Towson shot 40.7% from the floor in the second half and 34.5% for the game. The Tigers won the rebounding battle for the seventh straight game as they held a 37-33 edge for the game.

McTiller, who hit four three-pointers in the game, added three steals and three rebounds. Fooks contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Krystal Parnell had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Tigers.

Delle Donne led all scorers with 37 points as she broke Delaware's career scoring mark (1,685 points) in the game. Jocelyn Bailey came off the bench to score 10 points and grab eight rebounds while Lauren Carra contributed 10 points.

Towson returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 8 when the Tigers travel to Drexel for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
