TOWSON, Md. – No. 16 Delaware opened the game on a 20-8 run en route to a 65-46 win over the Tigers on Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association play. Sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller scored in double figures for the fifth straight game to lead the Tigers (11-6, 2-4 CAA).

“Give Delaware credit,” said Towson Coach Joe Mathews. “They are a quality basketball team and compete really hard. I felt like in the first half we didn't get off to a great start. We weren't able to capture any momentum.”

Akeema Richards scored seven quick points to help Delaware (15-1, 6-0 CAA) to its 20-8 lead with 11:10 to play in the first half. The Tigers scored eight of the next 12 points to make it a 26-16 game with 5:35 to play. McTiller had four of the eight for the Tigers during that stretch. Delaware closed the first half on a 13-2 run to take a 39-18 lead at the break.

Delaware shot 43.3% from the field in the first half while the Tigers shot 26.7%. The Blue Hens held a slight 23-17 edge in the rebounding battle during the first 20 minutes of action.

Towson opened the second half on a 12-8 run to make it a 47-30 game with 14:21 to play in the game. Sophomore forward Nyree Williams tallied half of the Tigers’ points during that spurt. The Blue Hens would push their lead to 53-32 with 11:29 to play following an Elena Delle Donne jumper. McTiller tallied five straight points for the Tigers to make it a 53-37 game with 10:12 remaining on the clock. The Tigers got a big play from Williams with 6:30 to go as she was able to block a shot from Delle Donne, the nation’s leading scorer under the basket. The Blue Hen lead would fluctuate between 19-23 points over the final seven minutes. Freshman guard Ciara Webb hit a jumper with 38 seconds remaining to make the final score 65-46.

Towson shot 48% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 36.4%. Delaware shot 39.3% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 41.4%. The Blue Hens finished the game with a 40-31 advantage in the rebounding battle.

McTiller led the Tigers with 13 points and three steals in the game. Senior guard Deree Fooks finished with 10 points and six rebounds while Williams contributed eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Delle Donne, was held below her season average of 29.3 points in the game, led the Blue Hens with 15 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Carra also contributed 15 points and four assists while Richards added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Towson takes to the road for two straight games, starting Sunday, Jan. 22 with a 2 p.m. contest at Georgia State.
