TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Deree Fooks, Krystal Parnell and Sheree Ledbetter combined for all 14 points in overtime to lead the Tigers to a 63-59 win over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers (13-9, 4-7 CAA) who snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, swept the season series from the Panthers (7-15, 1-10 CAA).

"This was an extremely hard fought basketball game,” said Towson Coach Joe Mathews. “I'm proud of my team. We saw a fight and a real desire from everybody.”

The first half was a back and forth battle as neither team held a lead of more then five points. Georgia State held a 12-9 lead behind a bucket from Cody Paulk  with 9:52 to play. The Tigers took a 13-12 lead with 8:50 to play but the Panthers quickly responded with a 6-0 run to take an 18-13 advantage with 7:35 to go. Towson used a 7-0 run of its own to take a 20-18 lead with 2:04 to play in the half. Georgia State closed the first half on a 5-0 run to take a 23-20 lead at the break.

Georgia State shot 34.4% from the field in the first 20 minutes while Towson shot 21.6%. The Panthers held a slim 26-25 advantage on the boards in that half.

The Panthers scored eight of the first 11 points in the second half to open up a 31-23 advantage, their largest of the game. The Tigers answered with a 10-2 scoring run to tie the game at 33-33 with 10:48 to play. Freshman guard Ciara Webb and Fooks each had four points during that run for the home team. The two teams would then battle through six ties in the next eight plus minutes of action. Kendra Long drained a three-pointer at 1:03 to put the visitors up 48-45. Fooks nailed a pair from the foul line with 37 seconds to play to make it a 48-47 game. Jerlisa Taylor would convert one of two chances from the charity stripe with 28 seconds left to put the Panthers up 49-47. Taylor missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 18 seconds left, giving the Tigers a chance to tie. Parnell then drove the floor for a lay-up with seven seconds left, tying the game at 49-49.

"I'm confident with having the ball in my hands and I'm more confident that Coach believes in me late in the game,” said Parnell. It is the third time this season, Parnell has scored the game-winning or game-tying basket in the final 10 seconds of the game.

Towson shot 31.3% from the field in the second half and was an impressive 9-for-10 from the foul line. Georgia State shot 36.7% from the floor but just 2-of-6 from the line.

In the extra session, Georgia State scored the first basket before the Tigers rattled off seven straight points to take a 56-51 lead with 2:40 to play. Fooks had four of the seven for the Tigers. The Panthers cut it to 56-54 before a bucket from Ledbetter and a foul shot from Parnell made it a 59-54 game with 46 seconds left. Parnell hit all four of her foul shot opportunities in the final 45 seconds to help the Tigers secure the 63-59 win.

Towson shot 60% from the floor in overtime and finished the game shooting 28.4%. The Tigers went 8-for-9 from the foul line in overtime and finished the game shooting a season-high 87% from the line. Georgia State shot 37.5% in overtime at 35.7% for the game. The Tigers out rebounded the Panthers, 53-50 in the game.

Fooks led the team with a season-high 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for her third “double-double” of the year. Parnell added 14 points, three rebounds and three assists while Ledbetter had 10 points off the bench.

Paulk led Georgia State with 21 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Chan Harris came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 9 when they travel to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. game.
