BOSTON, Mass. – Towson senior Robert Nwankwo continued his stellar play against Colonial Athletic Association opponents, but his big effort wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell, 70-51, at Northeastern Tuesday evening.

Nwankwo posted his 12th double-double with a season-high tying 19 points and 13 rebounds. The senior, who shot 7-for-11 from the field, has now registered a double-double in eight of his last 11 games. Sophomore Marcus Damas joined Nwankwo in double figures for Towson (1-27, 1-15 CAA) with 15 points to go along with a career-high five assists.

Northeastern (12-14, 8-8 CAA), which snapped a four-game losing streak, had four players score in double digits, led by Joel Smith’s 20 points. The Huskies shot 9-for-16 from beyond the arc with Smith hitting five of his eight attempts from deep.

Towson won the rebounding battle (30-29) for the ninth time in the last 10 games, but the Huskies scored 29 points off 19 Tiger turnovers. Northeastern owned a significant advantage from the free throw line, making 21 of 24 attempts as Towson went 10 of 15 from the charity stripe.

Trailing by seven early, Towson connected on consecutive triples from Damas and Deon Jones to close the gap to 13-12 at the 13:03 mark of the opening half. Northeastern tightened up its defensive effort from that point, holding the Tigers to just one field goal over the next 7:58. The Huskies went on a 19-4 run and would lead by as many as 17 in the first period.

Towson closed the first half on a 9-2 run to cut its halftime deficit to 37-27. After freshman Kris Walden scored the first bucket of the second half, the Tigers trailed by just eight, but they would get no closer. After the squads traded buckets, Northeastern scored 12 straight to take control of the game.

The Tigers are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 at New Hampshire. The game, set to tip at 3 p.m., is part of the Sears BrackBusters slate of games.
