CATONSVILLE, Md. - With the Tigers leading UMBC by 6-1 in the top of the third inning at Baseball Factory Field on Wednesday, the game was suspended due to rain. After waiting for a half-hour, the umpires called the game. It will not be made up.
The Tigers appeared to be on their way to a victory after scoring six runs on eight hits in less than three innings.
In the first inning, sophomore Brandon Gonnella led off with a single to right centerfield. After he stole second base, freshman Peter Bowles drilled a triple to left centerfield scoring Gonnella with the first run of the game. Freshman Brendan Butler doubled to right centerfield, scoring Bowles to make it a 2-0 lead. After a single by junior Kurtis Voytell put runners at first and third, junior Zach Fisher singled to right, giving Towson a 3-0 advantage.
The Tigers added two more runs in the second inning. Freshman third baseman Mike Draper led off with a single. With one out, he stole second base. A single by Gonnella enabled Draper to reach third base. After Gonnella stole second, Bowles reached base on an infield error while Draper scored. With two outs, the Tigers tried to pull off a double steal. Gonnella scored on the front end while Bowles was trapped in a rundown long enough to enable Gonnella to come around and score.
After UMBC scored a run in the bottom of the second, the Tigers staged another rally in the third inning. Voytell led off the inning with a single and sophomore Kurt Wertz drew a walk. After Fisher was retired on a popup, freshman second baseman Ryne Willard walked to load the bases. When Draper was hit by a pitch, Voytell scored to make it a 6-1 advantage.
At that point, the game was delayed due to rain and it was not resumed.
Junior righthander Mike Volpe pitched two innings for the Tigers and allowed one run on three hits.
The Tigers, who are 22-27 on the season, return to action on Friday when they open a three-game series against Hofstra at 3 p.m.
