TOWSON, Md. – Senior Emily Banes scored her 14th and 15th goals of the season – a program record – to lead the Tigers (8-10-1) to a 4-3 win over visiting Delaware State on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Junior Katie Ponce opened the scoring in the 21st minute before the Hornets (1-13) tied it on a Darcy Pelz-Butler goal 10 minutes later. Banes’ tally broke the deadlock at 40:58, but Chelsea Boursiquot went half the length of the field to tie the match again. Banes’ second goal turned out to be the game-winner in the 73rd minute as Boursiquot made things interesting for Delaware State at 85:45.
Banes finished her career as the program leader in points (77) and goals (30) and holding the school record for goals in a season (15).
"It was a great tribute to our seniors," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "Our seven seniors got on the field and got to log a lot of minutes, and our senior goalkeeper [Jessica Evanick] got the win today, which is great for her. We got some a lot of quality chances today and it was a deserved result."
Momentum favored neither team early in the match until Ponce took advantage of a flurry in front of the net to toe poke the ball into the back of the net. Towson continued to press and had four shots hit the post or crossbar over the next 10 minutes. However, Delaware State’s Pelz-Butler sent in a slow-moving shot and took advantage of some confusion on the Tiger defense to pull the Hornets even, 1-1, at 29:05.
Banes’ header at 40:58 put the Tigers ahead again just before the half, but Boursiquot didn’t let the Hornets fall behind. She dribbled down the field and scored just two minutes into the second half. The score remained knotted at 2-2 until the 61st minute when junior Taylor Knier took a free kick from 20 yards out and beat the DSU goalkeeper.
Banes and junior Sofia Read combined for a very pretty goal from nine yards to give Towson a 4-2 edge. But Boursiquot knocked in the rebound off a shot from Kaitlyn Schech; however, Towson’s defense stood up at the end to close out 2013 with a win.
Towson’s 11 seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony, and Banes was recognized at halftime for setting program records in career goals (30) and points (77).
