TOWSON, Md. - For a fourth straight year WBAL Radio (1090 AM) will carry a select number of Towson men's basketball games, beginning with the 2009-10 season opener at home against Miami University of Ohio on November 13.
"We are extremely excited to continue our relationship with such an outstanding organization as WBAL," said Tiger coach Pat Kennedy. "This has been a great marriage and we look forward to an exciting season."
WBAL is a 50,000-watt AM station whose signal travels substantially further than the metropolitan area and beyond.
The 2009-10 package includes 12 regular season games plus the Colonial Athletic Association tournament from the Richmond Coliseum in early March (if scheduling permits).
Calling the play-by-play action of Towson games on WBAL for a fourth consecutive year is veteran sportscaster and 1983 Towson graduate Gerry Sandusky. Sandusky has been the sports anchor at WBAL-TV since 1988 and has been recognized with two Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. He is also the radio play-by-play announcer for the NFL Baltimore Ravens.
"We take great pride in our continued relationship with Towson University men's basketball program," said Sandusky. "We have watched Coach Kennedy build the foundation for a program that will enjoy success for many seasons to come. We look forward to giving listeners a court side seat throughout the Tigers' season. We hope to also have the chance to broadcast games in March if the Tigers have a break out season and see their first NCAA action under Coach Kennedy."
While an undergraduate at Towson Sandusky played basketball under former Tigers' head coach Vince Angotti. The two are reunited again with Angotti serving as the broadcast's analyst.
The remaining 17 regular season games will be carried on WTMD (89.7 FM).
WTMD, a 10,000-watt station, is a public radio station licensed to and located at Towson University. It has been a part of the university for almost three decades. The station provides students with a variety of internship and independent study opportunities. Towson is the only institution of higher learning in Maryland to offer a major in radio.
Spiro Morekas, who calls the play-by-play action on WTMD, is also a 1983 Towson graduate. He is one of only two sportscasters nationally to call football, basketball and lacrosse action, as he has been doing for the Tigers since 1991. Angotti will also join Morekas as an analyst for selected games.
