Tigers Fall 6-5 to #17 Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - The Tigers scored three unanswered goals in the second half but it was not enough to overcome a pair of hat tricks as #17 Delaware defeated the Tigers 6-5 on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association action. JoEllen Sumego  scored the first two goals of her career but the Tigers (5-10, 0-6 CAA) had a two-game win streak snapped.

"I'm really proud of the heart the team showed tonight," said Coach Michelle Webber. "We came out a little slow and it cost us in the end put they continued to fight and showed that they can compete with ranked teams."

Delaware got the scoring start in the 8th minute as Rachel Schexnayder scored off an assist from Kimmy Schlezes. The Blue Hens would add to their lead just over a minute later as Casey Howard tallied her 18th of the season.

Christina Boarman got the Tigers on the board in the 11th minute as she scored on a penalty corner. Boarman's goal was assisted by Angie Brewer and Kim Schnell. Boarman's goal set the record for career goals at Towson.

Boarman's goal which was the 45th of her career breaks the tie she was in with Julie Lambi. Boarman now holds the Towson record for career goals (45), assists (32) and points (122).

The Blue Hens extended their lead as Schexnayder scored off a pass from Howard in 24th minute. Howard would get her second of the half in the 32nd minute off a penalty corner. The assists on Howard's goal went to Rae Everson and Missy Woodie. Delaware took a 4-1 lead into the break and held a 13-3 advantage in shots.

Howard struck for her third goal of the game just under 10 minutes into the second half.

Towson made it a 5-2 game in the 47th minute as Blythe Mackie scored her second of the season. Brewer and Schnell picked up the assists on Mackie's goal.

Schexnayder scored off an assist from Schlezes in the 48th minute.

Sumego scored her first career goal of the season in the 51st minute to makie it a 6-3 game. Sumego would add her second of the game in the 52nd minute pulling the Tigers to within 6-4.

Mackie would pull the Tigers to within one as she scored with 52 seconds remaining in the contest.

Jamie Dowling made a career-high nine saves for the Tigers in goal. Noelle Diana made three saves in net to earn the win for the Blue Hens.

Towson returns to action on Sunday when the Tigers host Longwood at 2 p.m.
