RICHMOND, Va. - Despite a goal from sophomore forward Liam Maloney, the Tigers were unable to come back from a three-goal deficit against Virginia Commonwealth and dropped a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association decision against the Rams at Sports Backers Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Rams scored three times in the first 48 minutes of the game to build an almost insurmountable lead as the Tigers lost for the third time in the last four games.

Less than three minutes into the first half, the Rams gained a 1-0 advantage when junior midfielder Thomas Huepper gathered a loose ball from 25 yards away and scored past sophomore goalkeeper John Steele.

The Rams upped the advantage to 2-0 in the 12th minute when junior defender James Neighbour scored on a 19-yard shot into the lower right corner.

Early in the second half, senior midfielder Owusu Seykere extended the Virginia Commonwealth cushion to 3-0 when he scored off assists from Neighbour and sophomore forward Romario Blandon.

In the 54th minute, Maloney ended the Rams' shutout bid when he headed in a crossing pass from freshman midfielder Stefan Froedert for his eighth goal of the season.

However, the Ram defense limited the Tigers in the remaining 36 minutes to earn the victory.

While Neighbour led the Rams offensively, junior goalkeeper Gabriel Rodriguez made three saves for Virginia Commonwealth, which outshot the Tigers by a commanding 18-9 margin.

Steele made four saves in a losing effort for the Tigers.

The Tigers will return to the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon to host Hofstra University at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Rams will travel to Old Dominion on Tuesday night to face the Monarchs.
