OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Mariah Schuette's goal in the 64th minute broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Tigers to a 2-1 win over Longwood on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. Towson (6-10) has won three of its last four contests with today's victory.
"I'm really proud that the team continued to fight today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "We started a little slow but the team stuck to the game plan and continued to fight and it paid off in the end."
Longwood (8-8) struck first in the contest as Christina Verhulst scored her second goal of the season. Verhulst's goal came in the 16th minute as there was a scramble in front of the net and she pushed the ball home.
The Lancers would carry the 1-0 advantage into the break at halftime. Longwood outshot the Tigers 5-3 in the first half and had a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Towson made it a 1-1 game in the 57th minute as the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner. Christina Boarman found the ball at the top of the circle and passed the ball to Tabi Hatch. Hatch would knock the ball home for her first career goal.
Schuette provided the Tigers with the game-winner in the 64th minute. Boarman had the ball at the top of the circle and found Schuette in the front of the net on the near side and she was able to put the ball home for her fourth goal of the year.
Jamie Dowling made five saves to earn the win in goal for the Tigers. Erin Bollinger made four saves for Longwood in goal.
Towson finished the game with a 10-7 advantage in shots while Longwood had a 10-8 edge in penalty corners.
Towson returns to action on Friday, October 30 when it hosts Drexel at 7 p.m.
