KITTY HAWK, N.C. - The Tigers closed out the fall portion of their 2009-10 men's golf schedule at the 30th annual ODU/Seascape Collegiate tournament where they tied for eighth in a field of 14 teams.
Host Old Dominion repeated as the team champion. The Monarch's Eric Onesi was the medalist with a (69-67) 136.
The field of 73 golfers was tested by blustery conditions that made an already challenging course more difficult.
"It was really hard to play, for everybody, the first day," said Tiger coach Brian Yaniger. "Just keeping the ball in bounds while dealing with rain and 25 mile per hour winds was a trick. I have never seen more re-tees and provisionals in my 13 years of coaching college golf."
The weather improved noticeably and so did the scores on the second day. The Tigers were fifth after the first round but finished tied for eighth despite improving by 15 strokes. George Mason registered the most improvement, making up 26 strokes to go from eighth to a fourth place finish.
"This one event doesn't detract from a very successful fall," said Yaniger. "I expect we'll do very well in the spring. With three players at or below a 73 average we'll be very competitive."
Junior John Duthie led the way for Towson, tying for sixth with a 145 (75-70). Junior Nyasha Mauchaza, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Golfer of the Week this fall, tied for 19th with a 149 (77-72). He was followed by freshman Johnny Hayes who tied for 27th and seniors Chris Scialo and Josh Jenkins at 61 and 68 respectively.
