TOWSON, Md. - Junior defensive tackle Yaky Ibia (South Lakes H.S./Reston, Va.) of Towson University has been selected to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America® District 2 University Division football team, it has been announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An Actuarial Science major with a 3.60 G.P.A., Ibia is one of 25 Scholar-Athletes named to the District 2 team. Along with the other 24 honorees, he is a candidate for ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America® University Division Football team which will be announced on November 24.
The All-Academic District 2 team is comprised of NCAA Division I football players at both the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Student-Athletes must carry a 3.30 cumulative G.P.A. to be eligible. District 2 includes all schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
A second-year starter at defensive tackle, Ibia has started eight games for the Tigers of Coach Rob Ambrose this season. With 49 tackles, he is tied for fourth on the team. The 6-2, 295-pound native of Calabar, Nigeria leads Towson with ten tackles for lost yardage. He has 2.5 quarterback sacks and has forced one fumble.
Ibia ranks fourth among all Colonial Athletic Association defensive linemen with 5.9 tackles per game. He is ninth in the CAA with ten tackles for lost yardage.
A two-time member of the CAA Football All-Academic team, he has made 91 tackles in his career.
Ibia is one of six CAA players on the District 2 team. Quarterback Chris Whitney, running back Angelo Babbaro and linebacker Osayi Osunde of Villanova also represent the CAA on the District 2 team, along with tight end Trevor Mooney and wide receiver Mark Mackey of Delaware.
Towson University is one of 13 schools represented on the District 2 team. Penn State placed four Scholar-Athletes on the team while West Virginia and Villanova each had three honorees. Princeton, Penn, Delaware, Navy and Monmouth each had two players chosen. Towson, Temple, Pittsburgh, Lafayette and Robert Morris had one selection each.
