NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Shianna Smith set the tone for Towson by rewriting the school's indoor shot put record to lead the Tigers to a first place showing in the Thomson Invitational Indoor Track Meet at the Delaware Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers finished on top with 217 points followed by host Delaware (182), Delaware State (120), Coppin State (71.67), Loyola (46.33), St. Joseph's (18), New Jersey Institute (12) and Villanova (6).
Smith recorded a 42'-8.25" effort in the shot put to erase the old mark set by All-American Kelly Robinson (41'-7.75") in 2008. Smith also won the weight throw with a 53'-3" effort. It was just short of the school record which Smith holds and set as a freshman last winter.
Elsewhere the Tigers piled up the points in the distance races. Towson took the first five places for a sweep in the mile run. Sophomore Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue showed the way, running the sixth best time at Towson for the event, posting a 5:10.68. Sophomore Katie Ogden (5:23.92), junior Brandi Gervais (5:24.27), sophomore Katlyn Dillow (5:24.33) and senior Megan DiGregorio (5:24.39) followed.
Gervais also captured the 3000 run in 10:38.19. Towson took fourth, fifth and sixth too. Junior Mary Tuttle won the 5000 run in 18:38.83.
Junior Ashley Adams, fresh off her school record performances last week at the Bucknell Heptaganol, won the 60 hurdles with a 9.02 clocking. Junior Mortara Okusaga ran second in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:18.86 that moved her up to third on the Tigers' all-time list.
DiGregorio, Nicole Smith, Dillow and Gilmartin-Donohue combined to win the 4X800 relay in a time of 9:53.87.
