It's Gold Rush Night in the Towson Center as the first 200 fans through the gate will receive a free T-Shirt when the Tigers host UNC Wilmington in the Towson Center Wednesday in a CAA game scheduled to be televised on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). Opening tip is set for 7:05 p.m.
STILL LOOKING FOR REVENGE: Despite the fact that the Tigers beat UNC Wilmington 58-53 earlier this season in Trask Coliseum, Towson is still looking for revenge. The Seahawks tagged the Tigers with a 103-98 double overtime home loss last season. It was just the 3rd time the Tigers had ever allowed 100 or more points in the Towson Center. This will be the 22nd meeting between the two teams. UNCW leads the series 13-8 with 10 of its wins over Towson coming since the Tigers joined the CAA in 2002. The Tigers registered their first sweep of the Seahawks two years ago. Towson beat UNCW 75-61 in the Towson Center in a regular season match up. The Tigers then ended the Seahawks' season by beating them 67-52 in the opening round of the 2007 CAA Tournament. That loss prevented UNCW from making its 24th consecutive CAA quarterfinal appearance. In the earlier game this season there were 13 lead changes and 8 ties before the contest was decided. UNCW's John Fields grabbed a school record 21 rebounds to lead the Seahawks who shot 5 of 34 from beyond the arc. Josh Thornton paced TU with 13 points. Calvin Lee added his 3rd career double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
JMU DUKED: Troy Franklin and Josh Brown sank key free throws in the waning seconds as the Tigers held off a late James Madison rally to preserve the Tigers' 81-78 victory over the Dukes. The win put the Tigers, 6-17 overall, in a four-way tie for 9th place in the CAA with the Dukes, Delaware and UNC Wilmington, all sporting a 3-10 league mark. The victory was Towson's first CAA win at home this season where the Tigers are 1-5. The Dukes, who trailed 57-41 with 12:07 left, gradually chipped away at their deficit, narrowing Towson's lead to one with 5 seconds left to play after Brown's free throw had given TU a 4-point advantage. With five seconds remaining, a 3-pointer by Darren White pulled the Dukes to within 79-78. The Tigers inbounded immediately and Franklin was fouled. Franklin made his two free throws. RaShawn Polk sealed the victory when he intercepted a pass with 1.5 seconds left. With 9:05 to play in the first half Jarrel Smith's jumper gave Towson a 23-21 lead. The Tigers never looked back again. Smith led a parade of 5 Tigers in double figures with his team high 21 points. The Tigers forced 22 turnovers. Their 17 steals were a season high. Brown matched his career high with 6 steals. Leading scorer Calvin Lee was blanked, marking the first time this season he went scoreless.
SEAHAWKS SHOT DOWN: The Seahawks have lost 9 of their last 10 and are coming off a 69-62 setback at Delaware this past Monday. UNCW trailed the Blue Hens 34-27 at halftime. The Seahawks closed to within 54-50 in the second period but a three-minute scoring drought resulted in a 59-50 Delaware lead at the 6:15 mark. UNCW would get no closer than six points the rest of the way. Leading scorer Chad Tomko (13.4 ppg) shared Seahawk scoring honors with Johnny Wolf with each netting 15 points. Wolf continues to lead the CAA at the free throw line with his impressive 86.7% clip. John Fields, the CAA's leading rebounder (9.5) and UNCW's 2nd leading scorer, was held to just two points and 4 boards before fouling out. The Seahawks have gone cold from beyond the arc lately. During this 4-game losing streak they are 19 of 90 (21.1%). Oddly enough, though, they lead the CAA in 3-point field goal percentage with opponents making only 92 treys in 336 attempts (27.4%).
