TOWSON, Md. - Head coach Bruce Atkinson has announced the addition of four players to the Tigers' 2010 roster. Alysha McCreary (Central H.S./Timonium, Md.), Luana Rocha (Marista H.S./Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Lauren Tonokawa (Mid-Pacific Institute/Kailua, Hawaii) and Jingyi Wang (Beijing 101/Shijiazhuang, China) join Katy Buck who signed with the Tigers in November.
McCreary, who will be a sophomore, joins the Tigers after one year at Central Arkansas where she played in 15 matches and recorded 14 kills. She also added six blocks. The daughter of Tigers' assistant coach Allen McCreary, she played her high school volleyball at Central High School in Texas. She helped the Bobcats advance to the playoffs during all four of her years. She earned first team all-district honors and offensive player of the year accolades.
Rocha will be a sophomore in the fall after playing last season at Lees-McRae College. The Brazil native led the Bobcats to the NCAA Tournament after posting 675 digs in 125 sets. She also added 63 assists and a team-high 54 service aces. Rocha was selected as the All-Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and also earned first team all-conference honors. She was a First Team All-Southeast Region selection by the AVCA as well. Rocha played for the Minas Tenis Clube in Brazil where she was a two-time MVP selection as well as earning an all-tournament team selection as both a setter and a libero.
Tonokawa, who will be a senior during the 2010 season, played for Atkinson during the last three years at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Last season, Tonokawa appeared in 27 matches and recorded 305 digs for the Vulcans. She appeared in 29 games and recorded 37 digs during the 2008 season at Hawaii-Hilo. Tonokawa played her high school volleyball at the Mid-Pacific Institute and was an honor roll student.
After sitting out last season at Bowling Green, Wang will be a red-shirt freshman for the Tigers this year. She played for three years for Beijing 101 in high school. She helped her team earn first place honors among the high schools in Beijing. Wang also played a year of basketball at Beijing 101.
Atkinson and the Tigers will begin their 2010 campaign on Friday, August 27 when they face South Carolina State and UMES at the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament at Hampton University.
