BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior defensive tackle Yaky Ibia of the Tigers was named to the Pre-Season All-Colonial Athletic Association football team, which was announced at the CAA's Annual Football Media Day on Wednesday at M&T Bank Stadium.
A two-year starter on the defensive line, Ibia made 52 tackles as a junior, ranking seventh on the team. He also led the Tigers with 11.5 tackles for lost yardage, a mark that ranked him 12th in the CAA. While averaging 5.2 tackles per game, he was ninth among CAA defensive linemen in tackles per game.
Ibia, who has made 94 tackles in his career, was also named as a Pre-Season All-American second team selection by Consensus Draft Services (CDS) earlier this month.
A very good student, Ibia was selected to the 12th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star team last season. An Actuarial Science major with a 3.51 G.P.A., Ibia also earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® District 2 team last year.
"Yaky is a very strong player," says Coach Rob Ambrose. "He is a very smart player and we have high expectations for him."
Ibia, who was born in Calabar, Nigeria, has appeared in 33 games over the last three years and he has started 22 of them. Among his 94 career tackles, he has made 15 tackles for lost yardage and has 2.5 quarterback sacks.
An interview with Ibia at CAA Media Day can be seen on the Towson Tigers YouTube channel along with an interview with senior wide receiver Hakeem Moore.
