TOWSON, Md. - Three Mid-American teams, two Atlantic-10 opponents, an Ivy League contender plus three local rivals highlight Towson's 2010-11 non-conference men's basketball schedule.
"I really like the combination and balance of this year's schedule with Atlantic 10 opponents, local opponents, prestigious names such as Princeton and Navy, and of course our very tough Colonial Athletic Association," said Tiger coach Pat Kennedy. "Once again it will be a very challenging schedule."
The Tigers tip off the season for a second straight year against Miami of Ohio (14-18), facing the RedHawks in Oxford on November 12. This marks the second earliest opener ever for Towson behind the November 9, 2007-08 lidfifter at home against Loyola.
Four days later the Tigers host Fang Mitchell's Coppin State Eagles (8-22) in a ninth meeting. Towson leads the series 5-3 and has won the last three. The two schools haven't met since 2003.
The Tigers then face their second MAC opponent when they travel to Buffalo (18-12) to meet the Bulls in Alumni Arena on November 20. Buffalo escaped the Towson Center with a 78-69 win in overtime last year but the Tigers still lead the series, 3-1.
A two-game homestand awaits Towson's return. Navy (13-17) visits the Towson Center on November 24. The Tigers, who lead the series 7-3, will be seeking revenge for the Midshipmen's 87-70 victory in Annapolis last year.
First-time opponent Western Michigan (18-15) of the MAC opens the month of December for Towson. The Tigers then travel to the Nation's Capital for a December 8th encounter at George Washington. The Colonials are ahead 8-1 in the series after nipping the Tigers 73-69 last year in the Towson Center.
The contest at GW starts a three-game road stretch. On December 11th Towson makes the short trip around the Beltway to face the UMBC Retrievers (4-26) in the RAC for the 52nd meeting. The Tigers lead the series 33-18, having won the last three games. UMBC dominated Towson from 1998 to 2005 when the Retrievers beat the Tigers nine straight times in this rivalry.
After a nine-day break for exams the Tigers travel to Hampton (14-18) where they'll meet the Pirates on December 20. The Tigers have won both previous encounters.
On December 22 the Towson Tigers host the Princeton Tigers (22-9) in a first ever meeting. Towson closes out the 2010 portion of its schedule at La Salle on December 29. The Explorers beat the Tigers 79-78 in the only other game between the two schools 28 years ago.
The Tigers will participate in the BracketBuster for a fifth straight year when they host a game on February 19. The opponent won't be announced until two weeks prior to the game.
Towson faces its first CAA opponent on December 4 when it travels to Hofstra. However, the league schedule gets underway in earnest on January 3 when defending champion Old Dominion comes to the Towson Center. The Tigers will meet ODU, Hofstra, Georgia State, Delaware, Drexel , and James Madison twice, hosting VCU and William & Mary while traveling to UNC Wiilmington, George Mason and Northeastern.
