TOWSON, Md. -  A talented group of 20 football players has signed National Letters of Intent to attend Towson University and play football, it has been announced by Coach Rob Ambrose.

Coach Ambrose and his staff introduced their recruiting class at a National Signing Day Celebration event before an ethusiastic crowd at Bill Bateman's Restaurant on Wednesday evening.

"We are very excited about this group of recruits," Ambrose told the crowd at Bateman's. "They come from different places and they play different positions. They have different parents and they've all had different life experiences.

"But they all have one thing in common," he added. "They all have the ability to see what this program will be - and not what it is."

Ambrose explained, "When we are evaluating prospects, we look for three things. The first thing we want to know is if they can help us win. Well, this group knows how to win. Their teams had a combined record of 177-60 last season. That's a lot of winning. Among them, they won seven state championships.

"The second thing we look for is a prospect's academic work ethic," he added. "This group has a 3.16 average G.P.A.

Ambrose continued, "We also look for good character and all of these players have that. In fact, 16 of the 20 newcomers were team captains."

Led by a pair of teammates from nearby Calvert Hall High School, defensive end Stefan Janik and offensive lineman Spencer Sutton, six members of the recruiting class are from the state of Maryland.

Eight different states are represented in the Tigers' recruiting class. Quarterback Price Litton and wide receiver Mac Sanders of Providence Day School are two of three North Carolina natives in the class while three New Jersey high school products have also signed with Towson.

There are also two newcomers from Florida, Texas and New York while Pennsylvania has one representative.

Running back Sterlin Phifer, a transfer from Boston College, represents Virginia in this year's recruiting class.

Defensive back Jalil Gordon of Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas comes from excellent bloodlines. His father, Darrien Gordon, was an All-Pro cornerback in the NFL who enjoyed a ten-year career with San Diego, Denver, Oakland, Atlanta and Green Bay. He appeared in four Super Bowls and started at cornerback for Denver's back-to-back Super Bowl championship teams.

"Signing day is cause for celebration because we are adding student-athletes that have one thing in common - they want to be part of the football program we are building," says Ambrose. "They are committed to what we're doing and they want to be part of it."

"This recruiting class is going to be a special one," he adds. "We are bringing in some of the most highly-touted players that this school has ever seen. These players are the future.

"For the last two years, we haven't been talking about wins," said Ambrose. "We have been talking about building team chemistry and competing and working hard. We promised that we would always play hard and we did.

"A lot of people have believed in our vision," he added. "Last year, we nearly broke the school record for single season attendance - and we did that with a team that only had one victory. But, the faith you showed and the support we received meant so much.

"Now, it's about damn time that we starting winning some games," he said. "We are a program and we are a family. We want you to come out this season and see us win some games."
