Towson University Sports Medicine maintains the health, safety, and optimal performance of the TU student-athlete through screening, corrective exercise, evaluation, referral, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and inefficiencies in biomechanics and neuromuscular control.

Staff athletic trainers (ATs) are charged with maintaining records of the health history and care provided to TU student-athletes.  Staff ATs also provide training to TU Athletic Department coaches and administrators in first aid and CPR and monitor practice and speed, strength, and conditioning sessions to ensure sound risk management in the safety and welfare of TU student-athletes.

In achieving this mission, the following are our guiding principles:

  • To apply contemporary knowledge and clinical skills to identify, prevent, manage, and rehabilitate illnesses and injuries to our student-athletes.

  • To support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Department of Athletics and the University as a whole.

 SM facilities

Towson athletes are serviced from three primary Sports Medicine venues: The Ford-Vetter Sports Medicine Facility, the Towson Center Athletic Training Room, and the Burdick Hall Athletic Training Room.

Opened in 2003, the Ford-Vetter Sports Medicine Facility, located on the first floor of the Field House, serves as the primary facility for Towson University Sports Medicine.  It is equipped with single and multi-functional therapeutic modalities that allow for significant flexibility in the treatment and rehabilitation of Tiger athletes. The 3,800 square-foot facility also has two specialty pools, a rehabilitation pool, deep enough for deep water running, and a deep cold pool, which can accommodate several individuals at one time. There are ample treatment and evaluation tables, a spacious rehabilitation area including a treadmill, a recumbent squat unit, Biodex, cable column, elliptical unit as well as upper and lower body exercise units. The facility also includes a physician's suite with minor procedure capability, staff offices, a conference room and a staff locker room. The Ford-Vetter Sports Medicine Facility is the primary athletic training room for football, men and women's lacrosse, field hockey, and track & field.

The Towson Center Athletic Training Room is located on the 100 level of the Towson Center. This athletic training room offers a cold plunge pool, several standard whirlpools, custom-made taping decks, treatment and evaluation tables and rehabilitation devices. Men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, softball, baseball, gymnastics, and volleyball are serviced from the Towson Center Athletic Training Room.

The Burdick Hall Athletic Training Facility is a satellite athletic training facility located in Burdick Hall. This facility houses several treatment and rehabilitation tables, combination Ultrasound and electrical stimulation units and is down the hall from the University's recreation center and pool.  This facility serves baseball, swimming and diving, and is home to the University's Sports Clubs athletic training clinic.
