After finishing no higher than fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in assists per set in each of the last five seasons, the Tigers turned to junior transfer Aubrey Kirven in 2011 to improve their numbers.
Kirven joined the Tigers after spending the last two seasons at Loyola University. She averaged nearly 10 assists per set in each of her two seasons with the Greyhounds.
Kirven made an immediate impact for the Tigers with a strong 2011 season. She recorded 30 or more assists in three of the first four matches she appeared in and posted “double-doubles” (assists and digs) in two of the first four matches.
The first weekend in September, Kirven was named the MVP of the Battle of Baltimore Tournament. She averaged 33.2 assists per set as she directed an offense which did not drop a set that weekend. Kirven was also named the CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week for her performance.
She was named the CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24 after posting 44 and 60 assists in wins over UNC Wilmington and Georgia State.
Kirven finished the season with 1,200 assists and recorded 30 or more assists in 25 of the 31 matches she appeared in. She had 11 “double-doubles” (assists and digs) on the season while adding 90 kills and 23 blocks.
Kirven, finished the season leading the CAA in assists per set with an 11.54 per set average, earned second team All-CAA honors.
In addition to Kirven leading the CAA in assists per set, the Tigers as a team led the CAA in assists per set (13.07). Kirven finished the season ranked 12th in the nation in assists per set (11.54) while Towson finished the year ranked 32nd in the nation.
With Kirven in control of the offense in 2012, the Tigers have high hopes for success.
