Virginia Tech jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first set behind a service ace. Towson battled back to pull within 15-12 on a Buck kill. However, back-to-back kills from Samantha Gostling allowed the Hokies to extend their lead to 21-14 and claim the 25-17 first set victory. The second set was close as there were four ties and a lead change early on. Virginia Tech eventually opened up an 18-9 lead and grabbed a 25-18 set win to a take a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Tigers kept Virginia Tech close in the third set as but Towson was unable to overcome an early deficit and the Hokies won the third set 25-20.
Buck added eight digs in addition to her nine kills to lead the Tigers in the match. Sophomore Paige Sekerak had a team-high 11 digs while senior Aubrey Kirven finished with 28 assists, five digs and four kills. Senior Marta Machos finished with eight kills in the contest.
Jennifer Wiker led Virginia Tech with 13 kills while Jordan Fish contributed 38 assists and four digs. Morgan O’Neill matched Sekerak for match-high honors in digs with 11.
Towson will be back in action on day two of the Hokie Classic on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Tigers are scheduled to face Middle Tennessee State at 10:30 a.m. and Harvard at 5 p.m.
