“I am really proud of how we competed today,” said Tiger coach Michelle Webber. “The team stepped up and played for each other today against a tough team.”
The Tigers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as they scored just 59 seconds into the game. Sophomore Kelsey Fielder scored her first career goal as she took a shot from the right side that deflected off the Tribe (10-4, 3-2 CAA) goalkeeper.
William & Mary got the equalizer at 4:37 as Allison Moran scored off an assist from Leah Zamesnik. Towson (0-13, 0-4 CAA) went back ahead, 2-1 as freshman Kelsey Jenkens scored her first career goal off an assist from senior Ashlea Carl.
The Tribe scored two more times before the half to take a 3-2 lead in the game. Kayleigh Ross and Pip Saunders scored for William & Mary.
At the half, William & Mary held a 15-3 advantage in shots and had all 10 of the game’s penalty corners.
The two teams battled throughout the second half as William & Mary was able to maintain its one goal advantage till 65:47. On a penalty corner senior Kate Nolan inserted the ball and passed it to freshman Heather Jenney on the left side. Jenney then blasted a shot just inside the post to tie the game at 3-3.
Neither team was able to score in the final 4:13 and the game headed to overtime. The Tribe outshot the Tigers 13-2 in the second half and had seven penalty corners to Towson’s two corners.
William & Mary got the game-winner 5:29 into the extra session as Maria Caro passed to Chaney Manganello who scored the game-winner.
Catherine Johnson played the second half and overtime in goal for the Tribe and made one save to earn the victory. Elizabeth Frey was not forced to make a save in the first half for William & Mary. Sophomore Tashani Dickson made 10 saves in the loss for the Tigers. Nolan recorded a pair of defensive saves for the Tigers.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Oct. 11 when they face UC Davis in a game that will be played at Maryland’s campus at 3 p.m.
