NOTRE DAME, Ind. - On the opening day of the Shamrock Invitational, the Towson women's swimming and diving team was led by freshman Stephanie Romano and junior Melanie Rowland at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

Rowland recorded a time of 56.08 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly and was the team's top finisher in the event, while also placing seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.24 finish. Sophomore Amanda Barber was the top finisher in that for Towson, tying for fourth place with a 23.94 result.

Romano performed admirably on the big stage, placing third in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:04.29, three seconds ahead of the next finisher. She also was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.87.

"I'm very proud of our team effort after the first session," Towson head coach Pat Mead said.

The meet will conclude Saturday.
