CONWAY, S.C. - Sophomores Ashley Simmons and Emily Wenger led the Tigers' women's outdoor track and field team on the final day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Sunday. It was the Tigers' first outoor meet of the season.
Wenger, a top performer in the hurdles dating back to last season, had a strong opening performance in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed fifth overall, timing 1:04.41 in her season debut.
Simmons continued a late surge from the indoor season and finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run, timing 10:38.62. It was the second fastest time of the sophomore's career and was impressive for Towson head coach Roger Erricker.
"She's really come around and I'm just so proud of her," Erricker said. "She's worked really hard and has totally stepped it up."
Freshman Kelsey Fiddes broke into the top-10 all-time in the 100-meter dash after an 11th place finish Sunday in the event with a time of 12.56 seconds. She now stands eighth in Towson history, bumping Tamisha James after James ran a 12.61 result in 2008.
The Tigers will next compete at the Ram Invite at VCU on March 16.
