CHICAGO, Ill. - Former Tiger offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod took advantage of the first day of the National Football League free agency to sign a five-year contract with the Chicago Bears.

A two-time All-Pro selection at left tackle, Bushord became the highest-paid offensive lineman in franchise history. His $35.965 million, five-year contract averages $7.19 million per season. The King George, Va. native receives $17.715 guaranteed.

During his six seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Bushrod was a four-year starter at left tackle.  In 2009, he was a key performer for the Saints' Super Bowl championship team which beat Indianapolis.

Bushrod, 28, was a fourth-round draft pick out of Towson in 2007. He developed into a starting role by 2009 under new Bears offensive coordinator/line coach Aaron Kromer.

Last season, the Bears barely missed an NFL playoff berth and posted a 10-6 record.
