WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team opened up an 11-2 lead en route to an 11-6 victory at American University on Tuesday afternoon. Rhiannon Coogle and Ashleigh Rohrback combined for six goals and three assists to lead the Tigers (5-7) to their fourth straight victory.
The Tigers and Eagles traded goals early and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 25:45 to play in the first. Coogle scored on a free position goal at 24:25 to jump start a 5-0 run by the Tigers. That run gave the Tigers a 6-1 with 18:21 to play in the first. Coogle scored three times in that stretch to record her fourth straight hat trick.
Jamie Silverman scored a free position goal at 9:45 which briefly halted the Tigers' run.
Towson scored one more time before the half as Rohrback tallied an unassisted goal at 5:15. Towson took a 7-2 lead at the half.
Towson outshot the Eagles, 21-9 in the first 30 minutes of play while American won six of the ten draw controls.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the second half at 29:19 with a free position goal from freshman Breanna Hamm. The Tigers scored three more times before the 22 minute mark in the half. Seniors Olivia Turner, Laura Zinkand and Coogle all scored during that stretch. All three of those Tiger goals were assisted by Rohrback and gave Towson an 11-2 lead.
Kimberly Collins scored her second goal of the game for American at 20:30 to make it an 11-3 game.
American scored three more times in the final three minutes of the game, which made the final score 11-6.
Sophomore Kelsea Donnelly made six saves to earn the win in goal for the Tigers. Freshman Alyssa Saxon played the final 6:30 in goal for the Tigers and made one save while surrendering three goals. Teal Harrison made 13 saves in the loss for the Eagles.
Towson outshot the Eagles 10-7 in the second half and finished the game with a 31-16 advantage. The Tigers held a 6-2 advantage in draw controls and finished the game with a 10-8 advantage.
Coogle posted her third straight game with four goals scored for the Tigers. Rohrback finished with two goals and three assists while Zinkand had two goals.
Collins led American with two goals and an assist.
Towson is back in action on Friday, April 12 when the Tigers host William & Mary at 7 p.m.
