TOWSON, Md. – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Champion Towson University women’s lacrosse team earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) NCAA Division I Academic Squad status, it was announced this week.
“I am very pleased with the academic recognition for our 2012-13 team,” said CAA Coach of the Year Sonia LaMonica. “We have had a great academic environment within our lacrosse program and it’s very gratifying as a coach to see that this culture continues. It also speaks to the great academic support that is provided to our student-athletes here at Towson.”
The Tigers were one of 65 Division I squads to post a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2013 season. Of the 65 teams to earn the mark, 18 of them, including the Tigers, qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Towson finished the 2013 season with a 10-9 mark after capturing its second straight CAA title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers were well honored for their strong season as senior defender Alexa Demski earned second team IWLCA All-America honors. In addition, Demski, redshirt junior attacker Ashleigh Rohrback and junior midfielder Rhiannon Coogle all earned IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region accolades.
