One Week to Go

The Towson University football team is getting down to the nitty gritty. Next week the Tigers will open the 2013 season against the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. It’s only the second meeting ever between these two schools. The Tigers won the last meeting between the two schools 28-27 in 1993.  Much has changed since that meeting 20 years ago. The Tigers have gone from scholarship football to non-scholarship football, back to scholarship football, from independent to the Patriot League, from the Patriot League to the A-10 which became the CAA. One guy who was with the Tigers coaching staff as an assistant, is now head coach for the Tigers, Rob Ambrose

In between his time as an assistant at Towson and then his return as the head coach in 2009, Rob spent from 2002-2008 as a Huskie assistant, finishing up at UConn as the offensive coordinator. There are still three assistants on the Huskies staff who served with Rob under then head coach Randy Edsall. In many ways, this will be a homecoming for Coach Ambrose.

As practice winds down, players have worked their way up and down the depth chart. As of this writing, Coach Ambrose has still not decided who the Tigers starting quarterback will, but a little birdie told me that by the time you read this blog we will know who will be behind center on August 29th. The practices I have attended have all been spirited. This team is focused and ready to hit people not wearing black and gold. The last few days of camp are the hardest for the coaches, because the players have been going at it for a few weeks and you must work harder to get their attention. That will change very shortly. At the end of this week, the team will be in their regular game week schedule as they prepare for the Huskies.

This week we say goodbye to a key member of the athletic department, and at the same time say hello to a new leader.

Mike Harris, the Towson Senior Associate Athletic Director for the past two and a half years bid farewell to Towson to go run the athletic marketing department at the University of Arkansas. Mike came to Towson from the University of Cincinnati where he worked with former Tiger AD Mike Waddell. Mike Harris did an awful lot in his short time here at Towson. He had a lot to do with the changes in the website you are currently on. He made many changes in the game day experience Tiger fans now have. On a personal level, Mike was a good friend and someone you really wanted to work for. It was a pleasure to work with Mike Harris, and I know that there are many others in the Tiger family who will miss him, but at the same time wish him nothing but the best in his new opportunity.

As Mike Harris leaves, I know we all are excited in greeting the seventh Towson Director of Athletics of the Division One era, Tim Leonard. Tim brings impeccable credentials with him from SMU, Central Florida and Boise State. Let’ s all show Tim and his family that we can be just as friendly here in Towson as everyone is in the south.

Believe it or not, the games begin this week. Women’s soccer opens up the 2013-14 athletic season on Friday when they take on Loyola at home. Volleyball opens a week from Friday at Virginia Tech. Don’t forget the first ever Towson event in SECU Arena will be when the volleyball team hosts Coppin State on Tuesday, September 3rd. It will be great to see that building being used by a Tiger squad.
