Student-athletes are challenged and encouraged to give back to communities and individuals who are in need. Through community service initiatives planned by teams, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council - PAWS (Proud Athletes Who Serve), and the University Office of Student Activities, our student-athletes are given the opportunity to develop the foundation for a lifelong commitment of service and volunteerism.
The Tigers were very active in the community in 2012-13. Tiger student-athletes, coaches, and administrators completed more than 10,000 hours of community service throughout Towson, Baltimore and the surrounding area just that academic year. This accomplishment is second to none in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and places Tiger Athletics near the top nationally for community service. In fact, the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognized the university for its service efforts this school year.
Visiting hospitals and schools, blood drives, assisting with the Senior and Special Olympic Programs, participating in charity runs such as the Susan G. Komen "The Race for the Cure", collecting personal care items and clothing for the needy, book, t-shirt and stuffed animal drives, stream clean-ups, assisting with Move-in Days, and sport skills clinics are just a few examples of community outreach activities sponsored by our teams in the past. Involvement in these programs by teams in individuals not only benefits the community, but also serves to develop team bonding, leadership skills, positive relationships between the University and the community, and the wonderful feeling of having made a difference.
