TOWSON, Md. - Here are the post-game notes after the Tigers' 49-39 win over Eastern Illinois on Friday night.
UNWELCOME GUESTS: When the Tigers beat Eastern Illinois in the FCS semi-finals, it marked Towson’s 11th consecutive road win … Towson is 8-0 on the road this season … The Tigers’ road record is the best in NCAA FCS this season … Top-ranked North Dakota State and Harvard were both 5-0 on the road this season … The Tigers’ road winning streak started on Oct. 27, 2012 with a 49-35 win at Villanova … Last year, the Tigers won their last three road games, beating Villanova (49-35), Delaware (34-27) and New Hampshire (64-35) … This season, the Tigers have beaten Connecticut (33-18), Holy Cross (49-7), North Carolina Central (35-17), Stony Brook (35-21), Albany (44-17), Richmond (48-32), and William & Mary (15-9) before beating Eastern Illinois, 49-39.
12TH VICTORY: When the Tigers beat Eastern Illinois in the quarter-finals of the NCAA FCS playoffs, they earned their 12th win of the season, a school record … Prior to this season, the Tigers had never won more than 10 games in a season … The Tigers had three 10-win seasons prior to 2013 … Towson was 10-0 in 1974 and had a 10-3 record in 1976 when the Tigers were NCAA Division III runners-up … In 1983, the Tigers had a final record of 10-2 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
ANOTHER RECORD-SETTING PERFORMANCE BY WEST: In the Tigers’ 49-39 win over No. 2 Eastern Illinois, junior Terrance West showed off his talent for an national audience on ESPN2 … He led the Tigers to the win by rushing for an NCAA FCS playoff record 354 yards on 39 carries … West broke the FCS record that was set by Adrian Peterson of Georgia Southern in 1999 in a game against Massachusetts … West also matched his Towson record with five rushing touchdowns, marking the third time this season he scored five touchdowns in a game … With five touchdowns, he broke the NCAA FCS single season record for rushing touchdowns in a season (38) … He also tied the FCS single season record for touchdowns scored … His 39 touchdowns match the mark set by Omar Cuff of Delaware in 2007.
LET IT SNOW: In their NCAA FCS quarter-final win over Eastern Illinois, the Tigers played in the first “snow game” in school history … Although the Tigers have played games after a snowstorm, the Eastern Illinois game was the first time that the Tigers played during a snow storm … The snow started to fall three hours before kickoff … By the time the game started, two-to-three inches had fallen … A snowfall of four-to-six inches was expected … However, the snow stopped in the second quarter … Midway through the fourth quarter, the snow returned and the Tigers clinched the victory while it was snowing … Coach Rob Ambrose said, “We had never even practiced in snow so it was an adjustment for us.”
RECORD-SETTING RUSHING YARDAGE: In his record-setting performance against Eastern Illinois, Terrance West also shattered the Towson single season rushing record … He broke the Towson single season rushing yardage record of 2,016 yards set by former All-American Tony Vinson in 1993 … After his record-setting night, West has rushed for 2,295 yards on 364 carries … He became the 13th FCS player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season … He needs only 32 yards to break the NCAA FCS single season record of 2,326 yards set by Jamal Branch of Colgate in 2003.
SECOND QUARTER DOMINANCE: The Tigers fell behind in the first quarter against Eastern Illinois by 14-0 which wasn’t unusual … Towson has been outscored by a 215-68 margin in the first quarter this season … In fact, the Tigers have allowed more first quarter points than they have allowed in the last three quarters combined (194) … However, the Tigers took control in the second quarter at Eastern Illinois and scored 21 unanswered points … In the second quarter this season, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 123-72 … Their dominance is even more pronounced in the third quarter where they have outscored the opposition, 144-34.
RUSH HOUR: While Terrance West’s record performance attracted the most attention, the Tigers set a single game record with 472 rushing yards against Eastern Illinois … While West ran for 354 yards, freshman Darius Victor had 80 rushing yards on 11 carries … Back-up quarterback Connor Frazier ran for 40 yards on five carries while Peter Athens picked up two yards on two carries … The Tigers’ 472 rushing yards mark the fifth time in school history that Towson topped the 400-yard mark.
