FRISCO, Texas - By reaching the NCAA FCS championship game, the Tigers became the sixth different Colonial Athletic Association team to play for the NCAA FCS championship.

The Tigers join Massachusetts, Delaware, James Madison, Villanova and Richmond as CAA teams to reach the FCS finals. Although CAA teams have a 5-5 record in the NCAA FCS championship game, the recent results have been far more impressive.

Since 2003, four different CAA teams have won the NCAA FCS championship since 2003. Delaware won the 2003 championship with a 40-0 win over Colgate. In 2004, James Madison captured its first title with a 31-21 victory over Montana. In 2008, Richmond won its first championship when the Spiders edged Montana, 24-7. One year later, Villanova earned the championship with a 23-21 win over Montana.

“When I first started coaching in the CAA, the other coaches told me how the level of competition prepares you for the NCAA FCS playoffs," says Towson Coach Rob Ambrose. "We have experienced it first-hand this season. The competition hardens you and toughens you.

"If we didn’t play in the CAA, I’m not sure we would have made it to the championship game," he added. "At the same time, there are a few other CAA teams that could have made it here. Fortunately, we got some breaks and reached the finals.”

The Tigers, who are making their second NCAA FCS appearance in three years, were one of three CAA teams to reach the FCS playoffs this season. Maine and New Hampshire were also part of the playoff field.

In fact, the NCAA came very close to having an all-CAA championship game. New Hampshire reached the NCAA FCS semi-finals before losing to North Dakota State.

Of the other CAA schools, Delaware has reached the finals four times while former CAA member Massachusetts played for the title three times.
