Pat Kennedy Announces Basketball Signing

TOWSON, Md. Towson University added a solid shooting guard to its 2009-10 backcourt when Tigers’ head coach Pat Kennedy announced today the signing of RaShawn Polk out of Greensboro,N.C. to a national letter of intent.

The 6-2 sophomore guard is transferring to Towson from Guilford Technical Community College where he averaged 24.2 points per game for the Titans as a freshman last season. He was the leading scorer in Region X. He tied the GTCC single game program scoring record with 40 points on 17 of 21 shooting in the championship contest of the Hampton Inn Classic. He also averaged 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season.

“RaShawn is going to add tremendous depth and strength to our perimeter,” Kennedy said. “He has great physical presence and is obviously known for his ability to score with the ball. However, he’ll bring a lot more to our program than just scoring.”

Polk was a standout at Dudley High School where he helped the Panthers to back-to-back  North Carolina State 3A championships in his junior and senior seasons. Dudley compiled a 57-5 record during those championship runs. The Panthers were state runners up in Polk’s sophomore year. Polk averaged 17.0 points per game as a junior at Dudley and over 19 points in his senior year when he was recognized as the regional MVP and Offensive Player of the Game in the state championship. He was also aggressive off the boards, grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game.

“In high school he didn’t shoot as much as he did in junior college,” said his scholastic coach, Derrick Partee. “He drove to the basket he was a great finisher. At Guilford Tech he shot the ball very well. He has an excellent work ethic and he’ll work very hard at Towson.”

Polk is the fourth North Carolina native son to play for the Tigers. Ralph Biggs (1994-98, Washington H.S./Washington, N.C.) was a 1,000-point career scorer at Towson and continues to enjoy a very successful professional career in the European Leagues. C.C. Williams (2006-08, Clinton H.S./Clinton, N.C.) was a two-year starter at point guard. Most recently Junior Hairston (2007-09, West Rowan H.S./Salisbury, N.C.), a two-time All-CAA selection and a member of the league’s 2009 All-Tournament team, led Towson in scoring as a two-year starter who finished his career ranked sixth on the Tigers’ all-time rebounding list with 629 boards.
