RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman goalkeeper Christina Siwiec of the Towson University field hockey team was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Tuesday it has been announced by CAA officials.
Siwiec led the Tigers to pair of shutout victories over Hofstra and #14 Northeastern which allowed Towson to qualify for the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2008.
"Christina made some critical saves this past weekend for our team," said Towson Coach Michelle Webber. "It's great to see such a young goalkeeper handle the pressure moments when we needed her to."
Siwiec started her week with five saves against Hofstra as the Tigers posted a 3-0 victory. She made some big saves in the second half as the Pride outshot the Tigers. Facing a must-win situation against the 14th ranked team in the country on Sunday, Siwiec came through with her second straight shutout. Siwiec made five saves against the Huskies, including a couple in the final minutes to preserve the one goal lead.
On the season, Siwiec ranked third in the CAA with a 2.01 goals against average and 101 saves.
Siwiec and the Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 3 when the CAA Championship Tournament begins in Norfolk, Va. Towson will face third-seeded Hofstra at 7:30 p.m. in the first round.
