TOWSON, Md. - Entering the 2011 season, Tiger field hockey head coach Michelle Webber was faced with a question mark situation in goal. Neither of the goalies on the 2011 roster had played in a collegiate game before.
By the season's end, red-shirt freshman Christina Siwiec had emerged as a solid net minder in the cage.
Behind Siwiec in goal, the Tigers posted 10 wins, four of them in Colonial Athletic Association action and qualified for the CAA tournament for the first time since the 2008 season. The 10 wins are the second most victories for a single-season in program history and the four CAA wins are the most conference wins for a Tiger team in any league since the 2006 team won four games in America East play.
Siwiec finished the year with a 2.06 goals against average, the third best goals against average in the CAA and a .719 save percentage, also the third best mark in the conference. She finished with three shutouts and shared a fourth shutout with fellow freshman Tashani Dickson. Siwiec and the Tigers posted the second most shutouts in the CAA.
Siwiec earned her first win of the season on Sept. 4 against St. Joseph's. That win started a five-game win streak for the Tigers as Siwiec held the next four opponents to just one goal each. That win streak allowed Siwiec and the Tigers to tie the 2006 and 2008 teams for the longest win streak in program history.
Siwiec's biggest performance of her freshman season came in the final weekend of the regular season as the Tigers needed a pair of wins to get back to the CAA tournament for the first time since 2008. Siwiec had five saves in a 3-0 shutout of a tough Hofstra team that came into the game having scored 74 goals in 18 games. She followed that up with five saves in a 1-0 shutout of No. 14 Northeastern in the regular season finale. Siwiec was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for her play in those two games.
Siwiec is one of four starters that will return for the Tigers for the 2012 season.
