Katie DeFilippo, who led the team with six goals and five assists in 2011, and Kim Schnell, who contributed five goals and three assists, have completed their field hockey careers. The pair was among the team leaders in scoring throughout their careers.
As the 2012 campaign begins, Webber will turn to her senior trio of Kasie Nurko, Janine Kovach and Kate Nolan. Nurko and Kovach started all 20 games last season for the Tigers and combined for 10 goals and two assists. Nolan made nine starts while appearing in all 20 games and contributed four goals and two assists.
For Nurko, the 2011 season gave her a chance to be an every day starter for the first time in her career. She played a key role in the win over William & Mary as she had a pair of goals, including the game-winner in that contest. Nurko also scored a pair of goals in the win over Georgetown. In the final weekend of the regular season last year, Nurko helped the Tigers secure a big win over Hofstra with a goal and an assist. The five goals in 2011 were a career-high for Nurko while the assist against the Pride was the first of her career.
Kovach continued to be a key contributor for the Tigers in 2011 with her leadership at midfield. She had a pair of goals in a tough loss to Bucknell. Her lone assist of the year came in the win over William & Mary. She would add goals in the win over Hofstra and in the losses to Radford and Delaware for the Tigers. Her five goals were a career-high for Kovach last season.
Nolan appeared in all 20 games for the Tigers in 2011. She made the first nine starts of her career throughout the season. Nolan led the Tigers with three game-winning goals during the year. One of Nolan’s biggest performances came against St. Joseph’s to help the Tigers get their first win of the year. She had a pair of goals in that game including the game-winner and also added an assist. Nolan scored the game-winning goals later in the season against La Salle and to help the Tigers secure the victory against Hofstra which helped the team get back to the CAA Tournament. Nolan finished the 2011 season with a career-high in both goals (4) and assists (2).
Webber and the Tigers will look to these three players with their experience to step up and lead the offensive push in 2012.
