TOWSON, Md. - Three of the Tiger spring sports teams have gotten their Colonial Athletic Association seasons off to good starts.
The Tiger men's lacrosse team opened its CAA schedule with an impressive 13-8 victory over defending CAA champion Delaware at Unitas Stadium on Saturday evening. Under the direction of first-year Coach Shawn Nadelen, the Tigers have a three-game winning streak. They are 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.
Senior Sean Maguire leads the Tigers with 15 goals and five assists. The Tigers return to action on Saturday with a road game at Hofstra.
Both the Tiger and baseball and softball teams are coming off tight CAA weekend series wins over Delaware. The baseball team improved to 12-10 overall and 6-3 in the CAA by winning two of three games at Delaware. The Tigers won the opener, 6-1. Then, the Tigers lost, 2-1. In the series finale, the Tigers edged the Blue Hens, 3-2.
Junior Michael Trionfo leads the Tiger pitching staff with a 4-1 record and a 2.62 E.R.A. As a team, the Tigers have a 4.03 E.R.A. The Tigers rank fourth in the CAA in pitching.
The Tigers return to action this week with five road games. They play two non-conference games at Virginia on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Then, the Tigers visit William & Mary for a three-game weekend series. Off to their best-ever CAA start, the Tigers are tied for second place in the CAA.
The Tiger softball team also won two of three games over Delaware this past weekend. All three games were one-run contests. After the Tigers pulled out a 1-0 win in the series opener, the Blue Hens evened the series with a 5-4 victory. In the third and deciding game of the series, senior Brianna Jones hit a game-winning homer in the 12th inning for a 4-3 victory.
Now 15-14 overall and 2-1 in the CAA, the Tiger softball team travels to Georgia State for a three-game series this weekend.
The Tiger women's lacrosse team takes a 6-2 record and a two-game winning streak into its two games this week. On Tuesday night, the Tigers visit Maryland. On Sunday afternoon, Coach Sonia LaMonica and her team open their CAA schedule by hosting Delaware at 1 p.m. at Unitas Stadium.
Returning from their West Coast trip, the Tiger men's golf team hosts its annual Fireline Towson Invitational Tournament at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md. this weekend. The tenth annual Towson Invitational is a 54-hole tournament that features 22 college teams.The tournament gets underway on Friday at 8 a.m.
The Tiger track and field team hosts its annual Towson Invitational in Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
