Good Thursday morning Tiger Nation, I’m Zach Maskavich and
this is the Morning Roar.
Wow, what an awesome first episode of #upROAR 2012: The Towson Tiger Football Story. I want to hear your thoughts about the show, be sure to tweet them to me @ZachMaskavich using #upROAR. In case you missed it don't worry we will have it up on the website shortly.
It has been well documented that football is back on campus and underway for the start of the semester, but other student-athletes are arriving on campus everyday including field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball and they have started their summer practices. Stay tuned to the Towson Sports Network for daily interviews with coaches and players of all sports conducted by Damon Lewis (@Towson_TVDamon), myself and the rest of the TSN team.
Attention alumni, you now have an incredible opportunity to purchase season tickets for ALL the Tiger teams for one low price (and I am talking a steal). The package includes tickets for all home games for Football, Men's and Women's Basketball, Gymnastics, and Men's and Women's Lacrosse! Be sure to check out the details and take advantage of this offer!
Let's Unleash the Roar
In the Baltimore area we have been spoiled with great defensive minded football and know all to well the old adage “defense wins championships.” If the Tigers want to repeat as Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions then they will have to play strong defense, which I fully believe they are capable of. Defensive Coordinator Matt Hachmann has a very talented and star studded group to design stunts and blitzes for and today I will preview the Tigers defensive line.
Not only are the players on the Towson defensive line special, but the defensive line coach has quite the resume. Coach Rubin Carter played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and has coached on many different levels, both in college and the NFL. Carter is a great asset to the Tigers coaching staff.
Senior Frank Beltre is not only the leader of the defensive line, but he also happens to be a leader in the locker room for this Tiger team. Beltre has a passion for the game and a work ethic that is second to none. Most athletes TRY to give a 110%, but Beltre does that and then some. For the second straight year Beltre was named to the Pre-Season All-CAA team, after leading the Tigers in tackles for loss and sacks last season. To give you an example how focused and team oriented Beltre is, at media day earlier this year I asked what it meant to be honored with this pre-season award and he said “nothing.” The only thing that matters to Beltre is helping the Tigers repeat as CAA Champions.
But No. 27 isn't the only one on the defensive line that opposing offensive lineman will have their hands full with (if they can get their hands on them of course). Romale Tucker is a name that Tiger fans and every Tiger opponent will know well once the season starts. Tucker is a converted linebacker who has incredible size and speed. He has the prototypical NFL DE body at 6-foot-4 and at a lean 244 pounds he can get to the quarterback in no time at all and with Beltre on the other side, I expect these two to put up crazy numbers.
The ends are just part of the Tiger defensive line. Junior Arnold Farmer will be clogging up the middle and be a nightmare for running backs. Farmer will be filling the shoes of one of last year's captains Marcus Valentine. But I think that Farmer will be up to the task. Farmer stands 6-foot-1 and tips the scales at 325 pounds. Farmer will play a huge role in Towson's run defense this upcoming season (no pun intended.)
A Look Outside Towson
Conference realigning is taking shape for the CAA with more changes coming in just one year. Albany and Stony Brook will be joining the CAA for football only in 2013 and Old Dominion and Rhode Island are set to leave. But not so fast, Rhode Island may actually reconsider leaving the CAA in 2013 according to providencejournal.com.
According to reports from ESPN, CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager says that the CAA is likely done adding schools for football, but other sports are still up in the air. Basketball is going to be where the CAA will be looking to add schools moving forward.
Countdown to Kent State
We are 21 days and counting to the start of football season, and if #upROAR 2012 didn’t get you pumped, then you either didn’t watch it, or you don’t have a pulse (either one you want to change quickly).
Injury news to report out of Kent State camp, according to reports it appears that the Flashes will be without their top receiver senior Tyshon Goode for the opening game against Towson.
Freshman quarterback Colin Reardon continues to impress the Kent State coaching staff, even through the first two-a-day practice.
Be sure to keep checking back, I will keep you up to date on the Goode injury as well the Flashes QB battle.
Thanks for reading another edition of the Morning Roar, be sure to check back same time tomorrow morning. In the meantime be sure to follow me on twitter @ZachMaskavich.
